Interview with Denis Rioux – Rioux Mods NR2003
Here's a quick 10 questions I asked Denis Rioux right before the release of the NSCS 2010 mod last week. Since it's the biggest mod to hit the scene this year, I thought it would be a good way to start this blog.
I'm looking forward to more interviews with other mod makers in the community, along with painters, track makers and site owners who support the Papyrus Nascar Racing 2003 Season title.
So let's cut the bull and get down to it... 10 questions with Denis Rioux!
- Where do you live?
I live in Rimouski, Québec Canada
- How old are you?
51 years old
- Do you have a family? Wife? Kids? Pets?
Yes, I have a wife and my daughter is 21 years old
- What is your day job? What do you do for a living?
I am a Mechanical Engineer, I work for an Engineer firm that designs the Electrical for buildings.
- When did you first learn about sim racing?
I like all Papyrus games, I began with Nascar2, but my first real interest started with Nascar3, I really liked that game. From there I started to look at how I could add things. But with NR2003 I saw the opportunity to make huge improvements.
- When did you start learning to edit tracks and then mods?
Early on, I was interested in creating tracks for NR2003, with my first track being South Boston (SBoston_dr). After that track, many more followed. My first modeling work was the other track Salem_dr, I created all buildings, stands and light poles. Very hard for my first job with 3ds Max!
After that, I created a set of stands for the Daytona 1970 track (in collaboration with Wrangler) that was to be used in the new GN70 v1.1 mod created by the US Pits. It was during that time I became interested in creating mods for NR2003. From of GN70v2.0 all the way through to the NSCS10 mod, we have steadily improved how to create mods and added many more things to the models compared to the original Papy models. But I don't work alone, I have a good team with me, and they are really important, because there is too much work for a single person. I want to thank Robert Vining, Smoke, sb70 and IB4JR who helped create the NSCS10 mod, and Chadley, MattFinney, DawsonvilleBill9, 11hamlin, Darrell Pace, jopajoe, psugorilla, ColFork85, B Childs for beta testing and creating the carset that was included with the mod.
I would also like to thank my old team at SimThunder for the work on previous mods!
- How did you learn to use 3ds Max?
I started to learn with examples and practice, because I had no experience with 3dsmax before NR2003.
- Of all of the mods you have worked on, which one is your favorite?
My favorite mod is the Grand National 1970 series, but I would like to finish Grand National 1955, also Cup90 is a great mod! But our most recent mod (NSCS10 mod) will be interesting as well.
- Is there any mod that you really want to make just for you that you haven't made yet?
YES! I would like to do a dirt mod of a 1980’s stockcar.
- What keeps you motivated to work on NR2003 today?
I like all Papy games, but NR2003 is the best for me, I like this game because a lot of tracks are available, the tracks are good quality, and I have a lot of fun creating new mods for NR2003. It's very rewarding to see the new mods ingame. I know this game is 7 years old, but I still love it!
